Sophie Baxter Cello
Sophie is a cellist and teacher based in London. She is passionate about making music education more accessible to all, particularly those living in rural areas, having grown up in Lincolnshire. She has particularly enjoyed teaching the cello for the charity ‘Music Masters’ this year and is currently finishing her PGCE in group instrumental teaching. This experience has also sparked her interest in workshop leading.
Sophie studied music at Durham University, graduating with a first class in 2020. She spent five years studying the cello with Sue Lowe, and more recently with Tim Lowe. She has attended many of the International Cello Gathering courses, and has received masterclasses from cellists such as Adrian Brendel, Jonathan Aasgaard, Louise Hopkins and Rebecca Gilliver.
After graduating, Sophie spent time working at two specialist music schools: Wells Cathedral School and the Purcell School. She has also worked for several music services and the National Children’s Orchestra.
Sophie is working towards becoming a professional orchestral player alongside a varied teaching career. She has been mentored by the London Symphony Orchestra on their ‘Pathways’ scheme for the past two years, working closely with Ève-Marie Caravassilis. She looks forward to beginning her master’s degree in performance at Trinity Laban in September.
