Rebekah Lesan
Cello and Composer

Slovak-American cellist and composer Rebekah Lesan is all about working outside the box. She delights in music from ancient to modern, working with emerging composers and exploring older works from new angles, sometimes using her skills in visual art or other multimedia in performances for a richer sensory experience. Though classically trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, she crosses genres, having engaged with Slovak and Scottish folk music and formerly played electric cello in a rock band.

A prizewinner at multiple competitions for solo play and chamber music, she has performed in recitals, concerts, and music festivals in over seven countries. She regularly performs with pianist Sinae Sung and violinist Scott Bryant in her piano trio Atelier Ensemble as well as in other duos, trios, and quartets, since chamber music is a big passion for her.  She has collaborated with artists such as Daniel Pioro (violin, UK), Erland Cooper (composer, UK), and performed alongside the Harlem Quartet (U.S.A.) and the Mucha Quartet (Slovakia).

As a composer, elements of several genres influence her own compositions, including folk, classical contemporary, and ambient music. Improvisation is a big part of her compositional process, and she often improvises in concerts. She is currently writing a series of works for the solo cello exploring themes of journeying and searching for belonging in a new culture, inspired by her cross-cultural background.
