Josiah Duhlstine Cello
Josiah Duhlstine is a versatile and dynamic cellist currently studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Josiah moved to Scotland in 2018 to begin his undergraduate studies at the RCS under Alison Wells. Josiah quickly found a passion for chamber music as well as Scottish Traditional music and became deeply involved in the Traditional Music department while forming various ensembles to perform within the conservatoire and around Scotland. After graduating with a First Class Honours degree, Josiah continued at the Conservatoire to pursue his postgrad, now additionally studying with fiddler Marie Fielding and dividing his studies evenly between Classical and Traditional Music.
Josiah is a member of various ensembles including the Phoenix Duo. The duo, consisting of Josiah and Scottish Pianist Catriona Mackenzie, have been members of Live Music Now Scotland since 2022 and have performed across Scotland in care homes, hospitals, and venues such as Usher Hall and St Giles Cathedral.
The genre-bending band Alba Challah is another one of Josiah’s current collaborations. The six-piece group began as a Klezmer band, deeply inspired by the passionate melodies of Eastern Europe, but eventually branched out into a wide variety of Folk Music as well as fresh renditions of well-known pieces of Classical music.
Josiah is an avid educator having been trained by the Suzuki Association of the Americas and currently teaching within the RCS Juniors Programme. Josiah is also a composer, and in 2022 won the American String Teachers Association 75th Annual Composition Competition.
