Joanna Stark Cello & Fiddle
Joanna Stark is an eclectic cellist and fiddle player from North-East Fife with a verve for creativity. Her versatility in multiple musical genres draws from her roots in classical and Scottish traditional music, which extends to classical contemporary, jazz as well as improvisation and original compositions. She has performed across the UK and in Europe with various different youth ensembles, including with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland (NYOS) at the 2016 BBC Proms and with Shamblestone folk duo at the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Young Trad Awards Semi Finals.
Joanna recently obtained her MMus in Cello Performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), where she studied with Alison Wells, Martin Storey and Ellen Gira whilst training with numerous other prestigious artists in side-by-sides, such as Scottish Ensemble, Hebrides Ensemble and Moishe’s Bagel.
Joanna’s interest in interdisciplinary arts has led to numerous collaborations with Scottish-based composers. She has premiered over 14 new works, including on BBC Radio Scotland in one of ten Nevis Ensemble 'Lochan Sketches' commissions (Nov 2020). In 2023, she was selected to represent RCS at the annual METRIC intensive conference in Leipzig, learning from an array of international teachers of improvisation.
A passionate teacher and workshop-leader, Joanna enjoys tutoring privately, and working with a variety of youth music organisations in Scotland. She is currently a Live Music Now Scotland artist with No Borders string trio, and is one half of Vágr cello/fiddle duo, with whom she has enjoyed focusing on bringing varied performances to community settings.
