Dublin-born cellist and historical cellist Alistair Baumann is a performer and educator whose love of music is primarily driven by the opportunities it affords for collaboration.Having previously achieved first-class honoursat the University of York, Alistair graduated from the Royal College of Music with a Master’s degree in historical cello in 2023.

It was while at schoolthat his interest in historicalcellowas piqued, as he had the good fortune to work withJoseph McHardy as his continuo partner forannual baroque operas performed by the music department.Alongside early music, Alistair’s greatest musical passion is chamber music. Currently the cellist of the Eledone Quartet and Cosmati Duo, he has performed with chambergroups at venues such as Westminster Abbeyandthe Tower of London.As a soloist, highlights include the Elgar Cello Concerto and Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 with Southern Pro Musica, and CPE Bach’s A Major Cello Concerto with the Nonesuch Orchestra.He has also performed in orchestral settings with the BBC Singers and Waterperry Opera Festival, and at the York Early Music Festival.

Teaching has been an integral part of Alistair’s career, and he is delighted to be able to continue his professionaldevelopment as a Benedetti Foundation Ambassador.Akeen linguist, Alistair has produced and cued surtitles for Longborough Festival Opera and the Academy of Ancient Music, as well as cuing for the Royal Opera House.
